Thank You - SRS Legal 2012

When someone gives you something it is always appropriate to thank them.

When an interviewer gives you his or her time, you’ve been given a very valuable gift and it is essential that you express your thanks!   It is just good manners.  A simple thank you letter shows that you have skills beyond the skills you presented on your resume and in the interview – social skills!

After an interview the interviewer should receive a letter from you expressing your appreciation. This should be within two business days, and some recruiters and job coaches recommend 24 hours.

Follow-up LETTER:

Content of the letter

*Appreciation for the interviewer’s interest in you and his or her time.

*A restatement of your interest in the position for which you are applying    and in the company

*Additional information that you may have been asked to supply

Should the letter be hard copy, handwritten or emailed?

Think about the way in which you wish to be perceived.  Most sources agree that a hard copy or handwritten note is the most formal and appropriate.  Email is, of course, faster.  It is fine to send an immediate email of thanks after the interview and follow with the hard copy or handwritten thank you note.

Handwritten notes are the most personal and for many positions that may be how you want to connect.  If you decide on this type of communication, carefully select your stationary or note card.  Monogrammed or engraved cards are best but a card with good stock paper and a simple message will do just as well.  Do not use cards with scenes, sayings – cute or inspirational- or in colors other than beige, gray or white.

For all types of thank you letters, or any type of communication for that matter, CAREFULLY PROOF WHAT YOU HAVE WRITTEN.  It is a good idea to use spell check and grammar checks if you use email, and also don’t hesitate to ask someone to read what you have written checking for clarity and errors.  I recommend not sending anything immediately.  Go back and read what you have written hours later.  It is amazing how carelessness can cause mistakes that you often don’t see on a first check.

If you are unsure of the proper content, I recommend checking websites which have sample thank you notes for interviews.  You can also find samples on job search sites like http://jobsearch.about.com/od/thankyouletters/

Remember, it is sometimes the small things that can shift a hiring decision in your favor.  Stand out from the crowd by taking the time to do things your competition for the position may have not – a sincere thank you for the interview.
